Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie and The Patty Duke Show all did it way back in the ’60s, and next season on The Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev’s Elena will make her onscreen debut on the same screen with Nina Dobrev’s Katherine, who made her dramatic return to Mystic Falls posing as Elena in May’s season finale.

“I can’t talk much about it yet,” says executive producer Julie Plec, “but one of the big surprises is that Katherine comes face to face with Elena.”

How does Nina feel about playing both Elena and her 19th century doppelgänger in the same scenes? “I will have to ask for a second pay check,” kids the 21-year-old, who as a child marveled over Lindsay Lohan’s dual performance in The Parent Trap. While special effects have advanced a thousandfold since Elizabeth Montgomery’s Samantha/Serena face-offs on Bewitched, Nina is still worried about emoting opposite a stand-in tennis ball when the series resumes production in July. “It will be difficult because a lot of acting is reacting to the other person, but it’ll be fun to step out of my comfort zone.”

Nina’s not the only one who’ll be given a tough acting assignment. Having the look-alike ladies in the same town will also force Ian Somerhalder to play two different sides of Damon. “It’s going to be an emotional rollercoaster for me,” Ian predicts. “Damon, with Katherine, is this youthful wide-eyed fun guy who is so intrigued by her — so different from the maniacal, more mature Damon you see with Elena.”

Nina Dobrev has admitted that she is relieved she does not have to star in nude scenes in The Vampire Diaries.

The actress, who plays Elena, explained that she would feel uncomfortable if she appeared in the more explicit series True Blood.

According to The Mirror, Dobrev said: “I’m very content with not being nude on national television. I enjoy True Blood myself and I watch the show, but I’m happy that bra and underwear is as stripped down as I can get for the show.”

Dobrev also dismissed the idea of a competition between The Vampire Diaries, True Blood and Twilight.

“I don’t think that we’re necessarily competitors,” she explained. “We’re all kind of in the same genre – there are vampires within all the series – but they are all very different. It’s like apples and oranges. True Blood is racier and a little bit older, Twilight is on the big screen, whereas we are in that in-between zone. We’re all very supportive of each other.”

Having seen the three of you on stage here in LA at this year’s PaleyFest, I noticed the camaraderie you share with your costars – Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder – is very strong.

We’re all really, really close, and we’ve become like a family, and we hang out a lot and work a lot together. That’s the way you develop these great friendships – you get to know all these people. Luckily, I’m surrounded by an incredible group of people who are not only talented and professional and successful, but are also sort of great down-to-earth people.

How did you first come to the role of Elena?

I used to be on another television series called Degrassi. We shot that in Canada, so I decided to move for pilot season and try it out for one year. Vampire Diaries was one pf my very first auditions after coming to LA. I went in, they liked me, but I went back up to Canada to shoot a movie called Chloe, which is in theaters right now. And during that time they asked me to put myself on tape, so I did that, and they flew me down. And I tested with the boys and auditioned in front of the studio and in front of the network and in front of the directors and the producers. It was a very long process, and we did screen tests. And it was very nerve-wracking. You can imagine – there’s people in a room watching you and analyzing your every movement. But it was definitely worth it, a year later.

As producer Kevin Williamson’s pointed out, Vampire Diaries differs from Twilight, in that it focuses on a town, as opposed to a few characters.

Yeah, the show having the town as another character in itself is very true and very important for the development of the show, because as much as it’s about the vampires, they all go back to this town. The fact that they all lived here, and the history of the town and everything that’s happened within the town and the people’s experiences. There’s also the witches and all these other things. These last couple of episodes have been so unbelievably intense. It’s pretty crazy.

How would you describe Elena and the journey she’s on at this point in the show?

We just found out who my mother is, and we’ve found out that she’s alive, and somewhere out there, but she doesn’t want me to look for her. So Elena’s having this conflict and she’s trying to figure it out. She thought her parents were dead, and they are. But then she found out that she has another relative that’s actually out there and living and thriving. And the fact that she doesn’t want her to meet her is unsettling, and it kind of makes you feel like you’re being abandoned. In a way, Elena has been abandoned. But I think she’s not gonna give up. Elena’s not somebody who tends to give up. She’s gonna keep fighting and keep looking. She’s trying to be normal and trying to function in this supernatural world that she has now discovered she lives in. Although now that the tomb has been opened there’s all these vampires running around, and they pose a huge threat. But she’s trying to stay out of it for the time being. But who knows how successful she’ll be? Probably not very, given her history and track record and luck. She’s always caught between all the vampires. [Laughs.]

There’s been a developing sexual tension between Elena and Damon. How has that been affected by the fact that Damon turned Elena’s mother?

Right now I think that Elena hates Damon’s guts. She cannot stand Damon at all. Because somehow as soon as she realizes that he has a redeeming factor, or redeeming quality of some sort, he tends to sabotage it. He’s very self-destructive in a way. And she finds out things like this, like the fact that he turned her mother into a vampire, or that he killed her. It’s crazy. But the thing is, Elena’s the type of person who tries to find the good in everyone. So as much as she hates him and can’t stand him, she finds all these good things in him and that’s what appeals to her and that’s why she develops this friendship. That’s what I would say the relationship is between her and Damon – they have a friendship. And it keeps developing, and she keeps on sympathizing with what he’s doing, because ultimately he’s doing everything out of his love for Katherine. Yeah, there’s some sort of a tension. I don’t know if it’s sexual or what it is. But we’ll just have to see where it goes and where the writers decide to take it, and if it puts any strains on her relationship with Stefan. It may, it may not. We’ll see.

How do you keep the relationship between Stefan and Elena fresh, knowing the show could go on for years?

A lot of it’s in the writing. I have to give all of the credit to our incredible team of writers – Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec.

In the show’s flashback sequences, set in the town’s distant past, you get to play a different character, Katherine. For an actor, how much fun is that?

I love playing two completely different characters. Especially because Katherine is so conniving and narcissistic and selfish – which is so unlike me, I would hope and think. So it’s really a challenge and it’s interesting to step into those shoes and be that person every now and then. But I think that the corsets and the costumes and all that really do help and ad to the character. Because as soon as I put that costume on, I feel like a different person, as soon as the makeup and the hair is all done. I even feel like I change a little bit. And it’s so much fun. It’s so much fun to go back and explore a different time and age and be a different person.

Have you read much of the books? And, if so, are there any cues that you’d like to see the show take from the books as it enters its second season?

The books are a great sort of launching pad for what we have done and deviated from. Because there’s some things you just can’t do or that just won’t translate as well on screen as they do in the imagination of the reader. And of course every person has a different take on the books and they have their own imagination. So it’s hard to cater to and please everyone. That’s not what we’re trying to do. We want to really make the readers happy, the fans of the books, and also make sure that we pay attention and make sure that L.J. Smith’s legacy lives through the books; and then really make that translate. But I think that it’s different. We change a few things. For example, in the books Elena is a little bit more of that queen bee, popular girl, kind of like Katherine is. But we changed that, because we wanted them to be different, and we wanted there to be a distinction between Katherine and Elena’s personalities. Other things that we’ve changed – for example, Mr. Tanner, in the books he was supposed to die at the Halloween haunted house. They’re using it as a great guideline, and they’re taking creative liberties in opening up the tomb, and focusing more on some things. But we’re still greatly inspired by these great stories, and just expanding and going further and upward and onward in different directions.

Is there any particular direction in which you’d like to see Elena go in the second season?

Yeah, I definitely want to see how her relationship between the two boys progresses; and if at some point enough will be enough, and if she will decide that being around these two individuals is really worth all the pain and heartache and all the difficulties that they really put on her life. She had problems before they showed up. But it’s definitely complicated things a lot, their presence. So I’d like to see whether or not she will call it quits or keep going and fighting for what she loves.

At PaleyFest, one young member of audience said she liked Elena more than “other vampire girlfriends.” You laughed at that remark. But what is the secret to playing a vampire’s girlfriend?

[Laughs.] I think that what’s important about Elena – being in the position that she’s in, and my choice to play her the way I have – I think that I want to play her real and play her as I would react to any of these situations; and she has to have a really strong backbone, and really have high morals. And not be that kind of pushover girlfriend who takes the shit from an abusive boyfriend. She has to really stand her ground. She has to be strong.

The show has shirked any preconceived notion about its “Twilight”-similarities and evolved into one of the smartest, sexiest, funniest, scariest and most enthralling shows on television. Tonight, “Vampire Diaries” — which has made a habit out of one-upping itself every week — takes things to the next level with its most harrowing episode to date.

But as star Nina Dobrev tells PopWrap, this is only the beginning. The season long rollercoaster climb is nearing the top and the deathdive season finale will have fans dying for season two!

PopWrap: It’s been roughly six months since “Vampire Diaries” debuted. Has it been a whirlwind?
Nina Dobrev: Oh my god, it truly feels like it’s been six days because everything happened at such a fast rate. It’s been intense and incredible and I wake up every morning and can’t believe it sometimes.

PW: When we spoke back in October you were clearly confident in the show’s ability to find an audience — one People’s Choice Award for Best New Drama later — how excited are you that it clicked?
Nina: You know, I remember shooting the pilot and I did feel good about it. I had this sixth sense that told me not to worry and it turned out that all the hard work and enthusiasm we have for the show has been matched – if not exceeded – by the fans.

PW: What’s your favorite part about working on the show?
Nina: I know a lot of people dread going to work every morning, but my work is playing pretend and doing stunts and screaming. It’s a lot of fun and I get to play dress up. Every day is exciting and different and new and cool. I couldn’t be more grateful.

PW: And when you play Katherine, you really get to play dress up. Have you enjoyed getting to create two completely different characters in the same show?
Nina: [laughs] That’s what’s most exciting about it – it’s a really rare opportunity that I have. The fact that I can play this nice, strong, courageous girl but also this conniving narcissistic, selfish self-indulgent woman is amazing. Katherine’s been around for hundreds of years and she is threatening and scary and dangerous.

PW: Will we be seeing Katherine again this season?
Nina: I don’t want to give a spoiler – just wait and see.

PW: Fair enough. What we do already know is that Elena and Damon team up tonight when Stefan is kidnapped — what else can you tell us?
Nina: Elena and Damon team up out of circumstance and love and need [to save Stefan]. This episode is very pivotal – something will happen that has not happened in the past to one specific character and it’s going to change, jolt and affect everyone in some way. It’s kind of shocking and will be interesting for the audience to see where it goes from there because after tonight, it gets really crazy.

PW: For many fans, the idea of Elena dating Damon is more intriguing than Stefan.
Nina: Really? That’s funny.

PW: You don’t see them as a viable couple?
Nina: I think people think that because it’s such a forbidden attraction. Everyone knows that Damon is dangerous and sooooo not right for her in all these ways, but there is an understanding between them. She doesn’t like him but she understands where he’s coming from and why he does what he does. Their relationship is getting more complex. Who knows what could happen in the future, but right now, it’s all Stefan all the time for Elena. She will do anything for him. Including having to put up with Damon.

PW: But it seems like the show wants us to want them together — especially in light of this picture (below) from the episode about Miss Mystic Falls.
Nina: All I will tell you is that as things keep progressing, them teaming up in any way is always out of circumstance. It’s always out of necessity. Elena is very loyal, has high morals and whatever she does, it’s for good. She’s nothing like Katherine. She’s not conniving and she would never do anything to hurt Stefan.

PW: Speaking of the Miss Mystic Falls pageant, did you have any experience with that world?
Nina: No, I hadn’t — but it’s not your typical beauty pageant. It’s not throwing batons and wishing for world peace. It ties into the history of the town and it’s all building up to that big event, Founders Day.

PW: Your show is one of the only ones that ends every episode with a cliffhanger. Does that — no pun intended — raise the stakes for the season finale?
Nina: Oh yeah, oh yeah. Every episode has to be shocking — especially the finale, which we start shooting next week.

PW: Have you read the script yet?
Nina: No one’s seen the script yet, but we’re hearing rumors and I guarantee that there will be more than one, two, three or four cliffhangers, “oh my god” moments that will be extremely shocking. The summer will be excruciating on fans as they wait for season two. You’ll just want to know. Hell, I want to know!

PW: Lastly, when I talked to Kevin Williamson in November, he picked Taylor Swift as his dream guest star to play a vampire on the show — who is yours?
Nina: Amanda Seyfried. I think she would be a bad-ass vampire. She’s so talented and has that look – those piercing eyes. And I’m sure she could be a vicious and terrifying vampire. I’d love it if she came on the show!

What was high school like for you?
I went to a performing arts high school, so I basically lived Fame. There was a lot of competition, but it was very productive. I met a lot of really cool people, I got to perform and that’s how I got started in the business. In terms of my personality, I’ve always been sort of happy with who I am now and what I was doing. I had a really great group of friends that I still have now and still hang out from High School so it was good.

Were you surprised by the decision to change Elena so drastically from author L.J. Smith’s original [Book] Version?
No, because we made a conscious decision to change that. Elena in the books is one of those mean girls
who gets what she wants, popular, blonde and blue eyed. I am not blonde and blue eyed which is what they [Showrunners Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec] wanted…. to go with the relatable, nice girl next door
who the audience can root for. That said, one of the coolest things about the show is that I get to play two completely different people on two completely opposite sides of the spectrum and I have so much fun doing it. Unlike Elena, Katherine is a conniving, narcissistic, b*tch!

Have the movie and endorsement deals come pouring in thanks to the exposure you’ve received from THE VAMPIRE DIARIES?
I’ve had some movie offers and endorsement deals that up until this point I have turned down because, in terms of movies, if it’s not something I’m in love with and are passionate about I’d rather not do anything on my hiatus. I want to be 100% behind whatever the project it is I’ll be doing. Same for campaigns. If it’s not something that i use and think will work I don’t want to recommend it for other people.

What do you think the future holds for Elena?
I’m anticipating a huge meltdown/emotional breakdown for her. Elena is this girl who carries the weight of everything on her shoulders. She has to keep so many secrets: Her boyfriend is a vampire, her boyfriend’s brother is a vampire, her best friend is a witch, her ex-boyfriend’s sister who is her friend died. She’s just got so much locked inside and is bound to break eventually!

At the Winter TCA’s, Nina confessed one of her embarrassing moments on set.

When we’re doing scenes, we have mic packs, usually in the back pocket of our pants or somewhere. I went to the restroom once, forgot about my mic pack and it fell in the toilet. And, a mic pack is $2,000 or $3,000. I don’t think they heard it. I was just really embarrassed and I felt really bad. They announced it on the mics on the set, so everyone knew and everyone laughed at me. I offered to pay for it, but they wouldn’t let me. – IESB
